Structures are connected together and placed at various angles in a practical living and working arena. And in doing so, they also provide the close-knit warmth of the family within.

Windows, however few, are not facing four directions. This is due to the cold northwesterly mistral that passes through in winter and spring. I recall humorously reading that "the mistral is strong enough to blow the ears off a donkey." Of course, not as humorous, if you're experiencing those dreaded winds first hand.

I have snapped photos over the years of these farmhouses, and leafed through books creating various compositions of these original works in oil. Remaining true to my artistic style, I add the appearance of ivy growing up the walls to give the appearance of the farmhouse's antiquity. And trees and shrubbery surrounding the structures for protection from the mistral, and shade from the summer sun. This also provides harmonious color and depth between the sunlight and shadows. Beyond the shadows and structured interior, I evoke added interest into the viewer's imagination while gazing upon the painting.

A sunflower field is especially inviting when the stalks are tall, and flowers in full bloom. And those in the foreground appear to droop sadly; due to the weight of their seeds and pedals they are lush and ready for harvesting.

Besides sharing a story about "Sunflower Field in Provence" . . . did you know that while the color yellow signifies HAPPINESS, the sunflower symbolizes LOYALTY and LONGEVITY?

http://www.christinenauman.com

Christine M. Symbolism for wisteria is longevity. To date, the oldest one known was planted by a Buddhist monk 1000 years ago in the central Kanto region of Japan. They continue to stand bringing forth beautiful purple blooms the end of April to early May. In 1395, an Imperial Prince planted them in the southern Prefecture he lived and designated "The Wisteria" a national natural treasure. And for that reason, they are also known for honor.

European families mark the ages of generations passing with the growth of this vine, and so it makes sense the vine embodies an essence of immorality. Fathers and grandfathers tell their sons of stolen kisses beneath the same wisteria that grew during the day of their great grandfather's life.

Perhaps that's why a pondering feeling began before the creation of "Wisteria" and carried forth throughout the 2 month painting process. Numerous memories standing below these stunning blooms and looking upward was magnificent during my years living in the Orient. What better time was there than now, to create an original oil painting depicting these vines for a collector to enjoy in the present, and share stories for their generations to come?

http://www.christinenauman.com

Christine M. How lovely is a carpet of royal and bold-blue colored wild flowers growing upon the rolling hills of Texas in spring? They are especially unique too. Bluebonnets grow no where else in the world.

Upon further research of these flowers, I came across an historic quote. "The bluebonnet is to Texas what the shamrock is to Ireland, the cherry blossom to Japan, the lily to France, the rose to England and the tulip to Holland." These are words one never could forget.

The oil painting is simply titled "Field of Bluebonnets" and considered first in the original series of these flowering fields.

"Winter Snow Morning" is a recently completed painting depicting the architecture of trees gathered in the forefront of the distant horizon. The application of white, gray, brown and icy blue -- the orphans of the color spectrum conveys tranquility. Bright yellow hues of the early morning sun barely showing herself, draws one's eye and imagination into the start of a new day.

Throughout my years traveling, many of the estates visited in England have some of the most beautiful "borders" created around their gardens. Often stone or brick, or very high coiffured hedges, I've found none of them to give one an impression of being confined. This particular one is rather more serene in it's design, yet the blue doors are inviting with boxwoods balanced in front, and barren trees dusted with snow.

I have created numerous paintings in oil of landscapes with a full moon in morning and evening in order to portray tranquility during that time of day.

In "Early Moonrise" above, no breeze whispers to pass, so the distant river is without ripples. Over decades, a section of the river has overflowed dividing the tree lined ridge, causing a stream to cascade downward. The moon, full and bright, is reflected in the water and provides atmospheric realism to my classical landscape painting.

All other "moonscapes" have been acquired, and this painting, recently completed after weeks of work in my studio, will be available for viewing by end of March.

"Early Morning Winter" completed after weeks of working in my studio and returning to sketches and notes for specific details. Early rising required to maintain truth with the various colors in the sky and at the horizon while the light seemingly changes every second.
The second in the series titled "Sunset Reflections" was inspired from the nature trails along the "Stage Coach Trail" in northwestern Illinois near Galena.

Beautifully serene autumn colors are depicted throughout the oil painting and the bright reflection of the setting sun highlights some trees and foliage not yet shadowed or hidden behind the hill or dense foliage.

While some leaves have already dropped from the trees to lay at the base of their trunks, one can almost imagine the crinkling sound under one's feet before jumping across the narrowest part of the stream to walk upward to view the setting sun at the horizon.

For over 24 years, I've created paintings depicting the various seasons. Sometimes, during the actual season, but more often not. When not, I need a combination of recall/memories, sketches, photographs or imagination to design and apply the oils in various phases. I do prefer timing a composition in exact relation to the titled season in my studio, but rarely that happens. The one above, I easily could.

"A Day in Provence" was recently created when the red delicious apples are ready to harvest. Some too large or pushed off their branches by others to remain on, have fallen to the ground. That also brings "life" to the 50 year old apple trees as if one could reach in and enjoy a bite.

I've always been partial to the works of the French Impressionist Pissarro, and have been compared to his structured style and technique by collectors over the years. With that said, when these young apple trees in an orchard in Provence began flowering in spring, their scent permeated the air as well.

Completed yesterday, "Red Poppies in Provence" is the latest in my series. How beautiful is a cluster of vivid reds amidst the various shades of greens in the grass and trees? Windsor reds and shades of orange accent the deep purple center within their delicate pedals that top the narrow stems. One doesn't need to walk within a field of flowers to savor nature. Often gazing upon them depicted in an original oil painting such as this, may provide the serenity we seek.

The texture of oil in the various layers of paint applied is dense. While texture provides additional interest to the work, it also brings forth a desire to reach out and touch the flowers and blades of grass. A couple more weeks, you may as the oils will be totally dry by then. Framed at that time, in one matching "Field of Daffodils" also complete this month.

Last month, I began a new series of work titled "Field of Daffodils." These cheerful yellow flowers are synonymous with spring. And, walking through an entire field of them, how could one not smile? Daffodils are a sign that winter has ended and rebirth/new beginnings are arriving when they begin poking their stems up through the soil.

Understand, they are a lucky emblem of future prosperity too. Given as a gift to another in a bunch, ensures the person's happiness. With that said, a beautiful oil painting of a "Field of Daffodils" would qualify as more than a bunch. Elation perhaps?

The original oil on canvas titled "Early Morning XXIV" is another in my series of work reflecting the morning sun before it appears above the horizon. There is tranquility that time of day, and the painting conveys that feeling through the golden hued tonal colors, and subtle, yet vivid light that glows throughout the composition.

As the painting appears to take on a "breath" within herself, she welcomes one to gaze upon her beauty in silence for a few precious moments and mirror the tranquility within oneself.

I've been savoring early mornings more than usual this year. While the ground is cool and still, nature seems to wait ever so patiently for the sun to appear over the horizon for a new day to begin. It is how I feel when the mornings are crisp, and I watch with anticipation the various colors that change while the minutes tick on. The colors are exquisite! And every morning there is something new and exciting to observe.

These are the reasons why I've been creating more atmospheric early morning landscapes the first quarter of the year.

This painting has been added onto my "Setting Sun" series. The only one available at this time as all others have been acquired throughout the years by collectors. Also, it's one of my classical tonal landscapes which reflects a particular time of day and season depicted by trees barren of leaves.

In autumn, I seem to personally favor this time of day. The time when I begin to relax when work nears completion. A time for contemplation that composes thoughts of what I accomplished today, and for what I will accomplish tomorrow.

Perhaps I feel it's why all have been acquired and it's LIII in the "Setting Sun" series. Besides viewing a beautiful landscape, perhaps we all feel the same within.
